But we should not just be content with un-cluttering the
physical space. Though that is a good start, we can take advantage of this
spirit by taking it further—by cleaning out our mental and emotional space. It
is where we harbor all the debris of emotional and mental wreckage and it is
much more harmful than the clutter and baggage in the physical space. One does
not carry around with oneself the cluttered homes and yards. Though we live
there, yet we also get to leave that space for some other, be it the workplace
or other places like the shopping mall.

Emotional and mental space, on the other hand, is what we
always have within us and we carry it around all the time and any clutter or
un-needed baggage in that space will continuously weigh us down and wear us
out. But would we really like to suffer that?

If not, let us make a commitment to let go of all the emotions
and thoughts that are weighing us down. Slowly release them as if you would take
the physical clutter out. Make a conscious effort. If there is more un-cluttered
space in the mind, one can dance more to the joys of life.

Focusing on the breath or body is one great way to start
this process of mental detoxification.

Take a moment to sit down with your baggage and acknowledge its
existence. Noticing why it is here in your life; what purpose it serves in your
life. May be you won’t find why it is there and that is fine too. We are not
trying to find convincing answers to why we have been carrying all this
baggage. The point to notice its existence and then allow the consciousness to
do whatever it needs to be done to create space around this.

We carry a lot of stress in our body these days. This stress may start to manifest itself in various aches and pains and, worse, may even bubble into serious diseases if left alone to exacerbate. Spending sometime in body scan or yoga nidra can be greatly helpful in resetting the body's rhythm and allowing it to ward off the negative consequences of stress. Following recording is meant to instill deep relaxation and is driven from traditions of yoga nidra, the yogic sleep. Play it or download it to your portable device to harvest the benefits of being with your body and developing a deep awareness of body sense. An eight week Stress Reduction Through Mindfulness program is currently being offered to McMaster medical school students as part of their self-care program. We meet for two hours each week and each session is focused on developing skills of being present and attentive. Participants are invited to learn the skills of 'paying attention' and awareness then translate that learning to the challenging and sometime unsettling environment of medical training.

Each session is very practical and experiential and most of the time is spent in developing skills of stress reduction and learning to bring the awareness to their day to day life. However, a short time each week is also allocated to intellectual learning of the methods and techniques and other important aspect of self-care.

If you would like to know more about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me. More information also can be requested from Undergraduate MD Program at McMaster University, Hamilton.
2010 was special for me because it afforded me the opportunity to complete my yoga teacher training which I have been intending to do for long time. Now that I have completed it, it has given a new meaning and scope to my own practice which keep on becoming better with each day of practice. I am hoping to continue my training in advanced methods of yoga practice in the next year along with training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a Jon Kabat-Zinn's brain child.

Next years will see my efforts in putting out programs reflecting the fusion of my understanding of yoga, psychology and mind body medicine. I hope that you will join me in this exciting and healing journey.

A Very Happy New Year to you.

Dr. Parmjit Singh
